Old key lying on a stone floor beside a dark wooden door

Coraline

Still continuing my review/revisit of my favourite kids’ movies and the books they are based on.

As im writing this. As we are getting closer to Halloween. I thought I’d read one of my favourite scary stories that I watch once a year on Halloween (I’m doing it for YEARS now), which is Coraline.

So I decided to read the book:

A story of a family of dad, mum and a little girl called Coraline.

Her parents just moved and they spent all they time working. Leaving Coraline all alone in a new house, boredom.  While searching her new home, she comes across a door. When she opens the door.  Is nothing but a brick wall.  How strange?

Later she comes back to the door, opens it, and this time it’s a tunnel.  She walks through and…… It’s her new home???? She hears a Mother calling; Coraline finds her Mother in the kitchen. Says hello. Her Mother turns around, and it looks like Coraline’s mother, but she has buttons where her eyes normally are.

The question now is…… Is Coraline’s dream coming true of a loving family, or is she in mortal danger?

A cautionary tale of ……

And yes, I realise that this story is similar to Alice in Wonderland! I feel like every review I’ve seen has to share that detail!

Again, I LOVE this movie, and I have a clear vision while reading the book.

Saying that, there’s one moment when the Other Mother is tapping her fingers and the sink is dripping away. Coraline looks away for a second, looks back, and the Other Mother is gone. That moment gave me the shivers

Surprisingly, what caught me off guard reading was the design of the Other Mother. When Coraline first sees the other home and sees her ‘mother’ for the first time.  Coraline sees this……

( that’s already terrifying! )

I was a little confused at first because in the first meeting, the other mother is SUPER NICE to Coraline to begin luring her into her trap.

But if I saw my “Other” friend/family (methodically speaking, I have no one) looking like this 👆 I would turn around and RUN!!!

I even looked at the *back of the book* and saw this……

Besides the button eyes ( and her fingers are a tiny bit long), but that looks more inviting and friendly. Kinda like the movie version.

She turns into more creature-like the further alone the story, which is fine, but that first impression I was little confused.

Everything the same as the movie: the gaslighting, the uncomfortable positivity, the “boring” normal parents/lifestyle in the real world. the book has mach more of a ‘spider’ theme. And the hide&seek game at the end.

Oooooo speaking about the hide&seek game, after getting one of the objects, Coraline is lost on the next one. And then meets the Other Mother outside the house, where the Other Mother ‘helps her’ by giving Coralline a key to one of the rooms.

               I don’t understand- this ……. Confused me!

Why is the Other Mother helping Coraline? I thought she was trying EVERYTHING to avert her from wining(my spell check is confused) the game.

Am I missing something?

Also, this is 100% on me; however, there’s a conversation with Other Father, in the basement, that completely lost me! I recon I was so exhausted and tried to power through I got lost reading.

I’m reading this book in my 30s, so I wasn’t fazed by the “horror” so much……. I really wish that I had read this book when I was younger, and it would’ve been interesting to see how much the horror would scare me. Like, the book has a lot of spider imagery, which would definitely scare me more as a kid.

it was a good read as i kid book, i enjoyed it.

I think I silently prefer the movie.

In all of my childhood memories movie/book reviews, i think i alway like the movies better.

thinks thats it now i need think about other horror books for my October reads. hopefully i can finish at least one book and write down my throughts in that time line.
