I realise that this review is a mess, but I’m SUPER ILL from the flu, and my head is a jumbled mess right now. I give it a go anyway.
The last post I managed was the end-of-year reading blog, but here we are with ANOTHER book review!
Ok, here we go!
I was thinking about my library, and for some reason, something was nagging me as I tried to read the first pages of like four books. That thought was that I wish I could continue reading Terry Pratchett’s books. However, the next book was ‘Pyramids’.

Which I attempted to read like 10 times and really struggled with. I just got a gut feeling that if I don’t finish this book now, then there’s a possibility I’ll be stuck with the Discworld series.
So I think the reason why im was struggling is that at the beginning of this book, it sounds like another assassin’s story, which I think I’m getting tired of. It’s like in the 2000s EVERYWHERE was Zombies, and after 20 years of non-stop zombies, they lost their magic. That was, I feel like an assassins in games and books. ( I haven’t read many books, but I’ve seen them online EVERYWHERE, even in 2025!! And I have no desire to read them!)
So I started reading it on the Kindle.
Started the story in the first couple of chapters, then all of a sudden, my eyes got super tired, and I couldn’t see the words on the Kindle. I took a break and went to bed. The next morning, I woke up feeling like s**t.
Turns out I came down with a cold/flu this week! Not fun!
I then started listening to the audiobook version from the start again. I had to push through my coughing and sneezing, but in 30 minutes, I had already caught up with the book. (Which was funny: the part of the book that gave me so much trouble only took me half an hour to listen to.)
Part of my issue with reading the book on the Kindle is at the beginning. Firstly, there are the strange names like Djelibeybi ( the way you say this word is JELLY BABY). I would NEVER guess that if I were reading on my own without the audiobook.
It starts with Teppic getting up and putting on his assassin’s gear, then explains that he plans to go to school and goes into detail about the pros and cons of each teacher, and he leaves to go to ‘Assassins school’… and so on and on.
My giant dumb brain is trying to absorb a ton of information.
Moving forward, I was surprised that the story quickly shifts to the school plot. After his dad, the pharaoh, dies, he is called back home.
It makes the start of the book kind of meaningless??? That sounds too harsh.
There’s the funny part when the Pharaoh dies, Death shows up as himself, the Pharaoh, confused, thinks it shows up as a ‘A Giant Beetle’? (I think that’s right.)
Soon after, there’s another funny part where the pharaoh is talking with Death and trying to explain the stages of mummification, which I find amusing, that explaining those stages and how odd it all sounds.
When Teppic returns home, he’s talking to Dios, the high priest, about building a pyramid for his late dad. And during these talks, it’s clear that Dios and Teppic have different viewpoints. Dios wants to keep to the old way, and Teppic wants to modernise the ways.
The art of the story reminds me so much of:
- The Road to EL DORADO
The Dios character reminds me of this character:

I think because I was ill, I can’t remember much else. I still enjoy the story; however, looking at the cliff notes, there’s mention of reality bending, journeys with teepic dad in the afterlife, A handmaiden, Ptraci, and…
…. (Im so mad that I missed this one for like 75% of the book.)
A mathematically gifted camel named ‘You Bastard’.
For most of the book, I didn’t think much of it, apart from it being a cruel nickname for someone!
I donno why it didn’t stand out to me…. Or is that the downside of being SUPER SICK and listening to the audiobook, my head is not retaining ANY INFORMATION whatsoever!!
It’s funny how I just finished the book, and I can’t tell you the last third of the book. (I still had a blast listening to the audiobook), And yet, my head can point out some information. Like when Death appears, the joke convocation about the mummification, even someone even quoted.
‘Come back with your shield or on it’
Which I recognise from the ‘300’ movie. Might have happened with Teppic’s father in the afterlife.
Still, that’s a Greek story, and I thought I was in an Egyptian setting, so I wasn’t expecting to read that quote.
I think that’s all?
Haha, it’s a total mess of a review; however, I said that I would write something on these books.
p.s bring sick doesn’t help!

I really doubt that I can finish another book before Christmas. So the next blog will be the end-of-year update.
