Book 4
(After writing this review, I do vaguely talk about the details of what happens. So it spoiler ‘light’ I donno!)
When I had a look at the fourth book, I had a smile on my face because the fourth book is….

And seeing the front cover, I knew that the character of ‘Death’ was going to be one of the main characters, and I was super excited! So far finishing 4 books (I’m currently reading book 5.) ‘Death’ is the most interesting character in the Discworld universe.
You start with a hiring fair where the main character, Mort, is looking for a new master to work with. Eventually, Death shows up and falls off his horse. Not the smoothest of introductions. Then he offers him a job.
Death takes him to his house and introduces him to Ysabell. And Albert? Both with very interesting back stories.
That Mort starts doing smaller jobs, eventually building up to more important roles.
Given time, Death takes him out for a job. In this trip, Death and Mort are invisible to normal people; only wizards/witches can see them.)Mort sees the princess and, for a second, thinks she can see him.
Mort seems to form a liking for her.
Time goes by, and Death, let’s Mort take over the job to see how he does.
(Can you imagine that?? You’re looking for a job, and the ——— GRIMREAPER comes by and very slowly teaches you how to do his job and then he gives you a chance to go solo to do his job!)
When the princess’s time is up, Morts lets time go by; he doesn’t do his job.
Which sets off the plot.
Eventually, Death gets bored and ‘disappears’, and starts looking for a normal job. It’s funny to see how people react when they know they’re talking to the Grim Reaper.
Now, because Death takes some time off, no one in Discworld is allowed to die. Which drives certain people crazy, and they can’t understand why.
(There’s a mystery B plot which I won’t spoil, I suggest you experience that yourself, it caught me off guard)
Almost reaching the climax, Mort is doing more and more of Death’s duties, and he’s going crazy with this new power. His behaviour starts to be more short-tempered is scaring his friends.
(I had to read the climax like five times, my head kept drifting away. 😦 i took me a while to follow what was happening. )
When someone literary looks for Death and tells him what’s going on, Death is MAD! Then there’s a cowboy movie ‘Mexican standoff’ moment!
Lastly, Death reveals that he keeps a small pearl which contains a new universe!? WHAT!?! And Death hints that there is a possibility that he might need to hit the ‘reset’ button in case things go REALLY bad in the Discworld.
Please don’t spoil for me, but im thinking to myself how bad does the Discworld get for Death to even consider that he needs a backup plan just in case everything gets worse!
The only confusing part is near the end, before the climax, I got lost when the story reached the library, and you meet the Orangutan and Rincewind.
Which is a shame, coz the Orangutan librarian seems like a fan favourite and my head switched off :(.
Also, is Rincewind the wizard in the first two books? If so, it’s nice to see characters from the other books show up. (It’s been a while since I read the first book now.)
Just started reading book 5, and already the first ‘chapter’ 😮
Moving forward, im planning to write more reviews on this world, im going to write down notes while im reading.
For this review, I left it a week, so im possibly forgotten parts of the experiences of reading this book.
(This is such a strange ‘review’? Haha )
Once I finish book 5, I try my best to write down my thoughts again. (hopefully i can do better)
